You’ve found your new friend. Now what?
If you have found a cat or dog at the shelter that you know you can’t live without, you will need to fill out our application form (PDF version below, cut and paste for email at the end ) application form asks questions about you and your family which will help us decide if you and your potential new friend are compatible. This is an important step to ensure the adoption is successful.
Once you have submitted your application, our Shelter Manager will review it and check your references. This also includes talking to your landlord if you rent your home to ensure they will allow an animal in their unit. This step usually takes 24-48 hours. If you are from outside of the Corner Brook area (ie – you will be making a special trip to visit us), we highly recommend that you submit your application in advance so that your references may be checked before you arrive. This will help enable you to bring your new friend home quicker. Applications can be emailed to nlwestspca@gmail.com
Once your application is approved, you will receive a phone call from our Shelter Manager letting you know that you can pick up your new friend! Don’t forget to bring a cat carrier or dog leash with you to ensure your pet is transported safely.
When you come to pick up your pet, you will be required to sign the final release forms (for cats this includes a contract indicating you will keep your cat indoors), a spay/neuter contract if applicable, and pay the adoption fee. The fee can be paid by cash or cheque.
You will be provided with a copy of the adoption release form and contract, the animal’s health record, and a receipt of payment.
What do I do if it doesn’t work out?
If you and your new pet are having trouble adjusting, give us a call. We can help you identify the issue and make suggestions to help make the transition easier. It often takes a week or two for the animal to feel comfortable in their new surroundings.
If you’ve tried everything you can and it isn’t going to work, you can return the pet for a full refund within two weeks. After the two-week period, returning the pet will be considered surrendering it to our care, in which we request a suitable donation to help with the care of the pet. This donation may be waived at the discretion of the Shelter Manager.

Do you agree to the financial commitment required to maintain your pet’s health including spaying/neutering, vaccinations, licensing, and vet care?
Do you agree to an SPCA representative possibly doing a home visit?
NL WEST SPCA POLICIES:
1. You MUST be of legal age (19 years or older) in order to sign this adoption contact.
2. You must provide at least one reference that can attest to your character and your ability to provide a loving home for this pet. Please include this references information, such as their name, telephone number, as well as your relationship to them.
3. The NL West SPCA does not allow animals to be adopted as gifts to other people. Only the intended owner is to sign this form and adopt the animal.
4. Ownership of adopted animals cannot be transferred to another person without the written permission of the NL West SPCA.
5. If for ANY reason you are no longer able to care for your pet, you are requested to contact the NL West SPCA to discuss the various options available to you.
6. You MUST provide a piece of personal identification such as a driver’s license, SIN, or MCP card. Please provide the type of card as well as the card # please.
7. The NL West SPCA reserves the right to refuse adoption to any person(s) who does not meet the requirements or qualifications.
